My Students

I have the amazing opportunity to teach second graders. My students have special gifts and talents. They teach me skills and abilities every day. What they teach me most is how to push through and not give up no matter what the difficulties are that you face.

I work at a Title I charter school that is dedicated to teaching students who are on the autism spectrum, as well as those who have ADHD and other learning and behavior difficulties.

No matter the difficulties that they face, my students come to school every day with smiles on their faces. They are ready and excited to learn! Learning can be a challenge at times for my students; however, they never give up and keep pushing through.

Just as my students never give up, they teach me to not give up as well. I want to give my students the best learning environment possible, a place where technology, information, and experience are abundant and allows them to follow their dreams and learn all that is out there. They want to succeed and I want them to succeed. Thank you for helping us do so!

My Project

The pandemic has taken an unprecedented toll on education and this is especially true for my students. My students are autistic and have various learning disabilities so they are already at a disadvantage. Most of them are below grade level and struggle with basic foundational skills they should have mastered in kindergarten. Additionally, my students struggle staying on task and focusing when working independently. It makes it hard to provide individual, targeted intervention.

The learning resources in this project will give my students a fighting chance to master those basic literacy skills in an engaging, hands-on way.

Just as math outcomes improve with hands-on manipulatives, literacy outcomes can improve when students can practice those foundational decoding skills with hands-on manipulatives. Everything in this project is for that purpose. The iPads and Osmo kits will allow the students to learn independently while I work with small groups using the magnetic letters and word magnets with various literacy activities.
