Rio del Norte's Organic Vegetable Garden

My students need gardening tools such as shovels and trowels in order to cultivate and maintain a school organic vegetable garden.

My Students

Have you ever tried to teach 30 7 and 8-year-olds about making healthy nutrition choices while they are ALL licking bright red "Hot Chip" (you know the ones I mean, that one with the Cheetah on the bag) powder from their fingers?

During the 2012-2013 school year, our school hit a mile-stone!

We became a Title I school, which means we had so many families qualify for free or reduced lunch that our ENTIRE school now gets free lunch for the first time since our school opened 11 years ago. Many of our families are in that uncomfortable "middle" income bracket; working VERY hard to make ends meet. Our school is located in Southern California and we have a 1200 square foot plot of dirt just aching to be turned into a vegetable garden.

My Project

We would like to turn the dirt plot right outside my classroom into an organic vegetable garden. My goal for my students is to be able to grow an abundance of vegetables which can then help to supplement our cafeteria's very small salad bar. The supplies I am requesting will make it possible for approximately 20-30 students to work in the garden at one time. We will need to turn dirt, make rows for planting, plant seeds and seedlings, and keep the weeds under control!

Every school year I start off teaching a unit on healthy nutrition choices.

I usually inspire my students to bring healthy snacks to school for about the first month of school, then I see them....the dreaded "Hot Chips"! I truly believe that if my students can get their hands dirty and grow vegetables and fruits organically, they will be more likely to eat what THEY have planted and cared for. How great would it be for my students to tell the other kids; "Hey, we grew that. Eat it!"?
