This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Covid has had an enormous effect on our school community. Students experienced—are still experiencing—fear, uncertainty, and loss. In the arts, our work includes a willingness to be vulnerable, but living in a world with Covid, our children are constantly trying to soothe their spirits and protect their hearts. I see that manifest every day in school—some are withdrawn, some are quick to give up, some show a giddiness that won’t settle. In music class, students have been struggling with simple musical practices of relaxing, listening deeply, and trying—but recently, that dynamic began to change—as groups of students brought songs to life with handbells.

I started a new after school music club for fifth and sixth grade students so they can bond and grow through arranging and rehearsing music they will perform publicly!

My performing ensemble members show tremendous creativity and inspiration during our rehearsals, and I want to give them beautiful handbells to work with that will bring their musical ideas to life the way they envision! These single-ring handbells provide more control of the sound and allow for multiple bell-playing by an individual. The bronze bells have a superior sound to the beginner bells the students have been using thus far. Without the color-coding, students take on a greater challenge in reading and playing. The rhythm materials will help my students learn to read, compose and arrange the music they will perform together. Please support them as they venture out into the public as a new team.
