This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fourth grade students are a diverse bunch of learners who start every day with a smile and a positive attitude! The majority of them are English Learners, several of them recent immigrants. Many of their families have experienced economic and personal hardships this year, but that has not stopped my amazing scholars from working hard every day to meet the high expectations we set for all of our students.

All of my students have become enthusiastic readers this year, despite the difficult couple of years they've experienced with interruptions to their learning.

They look forward to our Friday morning library visits when they have the opportunity to choose a new book to read. They began the year as somewhat reluctant readers who now devour books. The look of pride on their faces as they finish reading their library books every week is priceless!

My Project

Over long breaks from school, students from under-resourced families often fall behind because they don't have access to educational materials outside of school. This holiday season, I'd like to help ensure my students don't fall behind with their reading and writing by providing them with a favorite title and fun writing materials.

This year, the big hits are graphic novels that allow the students to successfully read an entire novel with the helpful linguistic support of the many illustrations as they work to improve their vocabulary and reading comprehension skills.

I also included in my request a special treat for my students--the Pop-it bracelet--that has been shown to help alleviate anxiety. Time away from school can be stressful for many students whose families experience food insecurity as well as overall economic insecurity, especially during the holiday season.
