My Students

My classroom is designed to prepare students for middle school and beyond. While I believe teaching the standards is important, I'm much more concerned with teaching the children how to be good students. I'd like to think that we have a great deal of fun as we accomplish this goal in class.

I have a very diverse student population.

We have children of all races and backgrounds, as well as children at both ends of the academic spectrum. My class is made up almost exclusively of special education children and gifted and talented students; with nothing in between. We are a high need school with a large percentage of students who are on free and reduced lunch, or whom are living in poverty. There is a large academic gap for many of the students in our school, particularly in the area of reading.

My Project

The students in my class that are in need of remediation will be using the various reading programs that I am requesting for part of their intervention. These students have a variety of needs, so I need a variety of interventions to help them. My goal is to target these needs individually with my students, so, again, I need a variety of resources to make sure all the kids' needs are met. Pencil sharpeners have been a big issue in my class over the years. In an effort to save money, I have bought less expensive versions, and they always break. What I need is a sharpener that will be durable (there are 30+ students in my class and we do a lot of writing). This particular model is designed to be quiet, which will help cut down on the distractions that are caused when a child uses a loud sharpener.

This project will make a difference because the students in my class will be getting high quality, targeted intervention.

These interventions will be engaging and rigorous. Using these interventions will help my students close the gap they currently have with their reading proficiency. My students will also feel comfortable knowing that each day they can have a sharp pencil that can quickly, and reliably be resharpened as needed throughout their academic day.
