Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every morning my students start off the day by shaking my hand and looking me in the eye. We get started on our Do Now! and we begin our Champions' Creed. One student created her own Champions Creed, in which my favorite line is "Right before your eyes, you become a Champion."
My students are all third graders living in the inner city.
All of my students are African Americans from low socioeconomic backgrounds. They are some of the funniest third graders you will ever meet, but their circumstances and the difficulties they face living in poverty are far from humorous. Our school is a public school where students are excited and eager to learn, yet they are often overwhelmed with negative life circumstances. Students have so many extracurricular worries and struggles, but parents and students understand that their circumstances are not an excuse.
Most students live in single parent homes or are raised by grandparents and other family members. Although students are struggling financially, they come to school every day because their parents and guardians believe that education is a door out of poverty. They hold onto the hope that their children can have better opportunities than they did.
My Project
Students will use the listening center to listen to fluent readers and hear themselves read. Most of my students still have to read aloud; therefore whispers will help students read without disturbing and distracting those around them. School supplies such as anchor chart paper, play dough, copy paper, dry erase markers and wipe erase boards will be used for working on words, writing, spelling, decoding and blending words, as well as for creating words and specific spelling patterns.
Students will also use the wipe erase boards for comprehension activities in centers. Copy paper is scarce at my school and it will be used to print Demonstrations of Learning, quizzes, tests, activities and homework. The anchor chart paper will help students visualize reading comprehension and language arts skills. It will be used to help students become independent learners who can constantly reference a topic.
As one of my students wrote in her creed, "Right before your eyes, you become a champion." This is already beginning to happen in my classroom.
Students are beginning to believe in themselves and their reading abilities. Despite their lack of resources and the incredible difficulties of being a child in poverty, my students show up every day to learn. With the help of these supplies, right before our eyes our students will become champions, champion readers and champion human beings.
