My students come from all over the world as refugees, as immigrants, and as locals, but they just want to be kids who do not worry about how they look and access to the things they need each day. By having these things in my classroom, I am able to ensure that my students have one less concern in their day to day life.
When I was in foster care, one of the greatest changes in my life was being able to walk into the kitchen or bathroom and know everything that I needed was there and I didn't need to ask permission to access it.
Having a care closet on each floor of a building, and in as many classrooms as possible, allows for this level of security.
It is only the third week of school and I have already gone through 100 snacks out of pocket. That means that I will likely need to do this project more than once this year. Creating food security creates school attendance and then job security. By creating a safe place for all to access what they need, we are helping create classrooms students want to be in.
