My students are 14 wonderful little people who light up my life. All of them have IEPs and have some type of mental or physical disability, but that doesn't define who they are.
These future little professionals don't let their disabilities limit them in what they do and how far we go on a daily basis.
Their confidence and their ambition to overcome their obstacles in life give others that work around them the motivation to keep striving in their own endeavors.
Every student learns differently, I believe as a society we are beginning to see more and more studies that prove this. Everything from the way we learn, to the way we write, right down to the preference of seating in the classroom. Some students do better standing, while others enjoy flexible seating (e.i bean bags, yoga ball chairs), and other would rather be moving. This doesn't mean that they are not all actively engaged in learning. They are just doing it in a different way. These new bikes would be able to address those students who benefit from movement while learning and would be a great new resource for our classroom.
My Project
Incorporating movement throughout the day helps make students less fidgety and more focused on learning. Research shows this improves on task behaviors and increases less desired behaviors within the classroom. By incorporating movement into the students' school day, I am supporting student learning, in a different way. Research also shows that incorporating activities that involve all senses can make learning more memorable. Many students with disabilities are only able to focus for a maximum of 15-30 minutes. Hopefully, with movement, the amount of focus and understanding will increase ultimately making students successful. With the right tools everyone can be successful.
