Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Academy is the home of the Dragons. Our counseling center is a safe zone on campus often visited by our students searching for academic, career, and emotional support.
The student population is approximately 850 students with about 90% of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch, making it a Title 1 school.
Many of our students would be the first in their families to go to college. Our school takes pride on the various Arts and STEM electives that include: dance, art, media arts, drama, band, computer coding, forensic science, and video production. As the Academy continues to grow, it is important that the students have a thriving campus full of excitement and education while also having a place that meets their social/emotional needs. We are preparing students to not only obtain the tools to be successful in middle school and beyond, but also to be contributing members in their community.
One of the roles of our Counseling team includes increasing the child's experience, expression, and management of emotions and the ability to establish positive and rewarding relationships with others. Many of our students express emotional concerns that need to be addressed, managed, and coped with positively.
My Project
The lights, furniture, and ocean wallpaper will transform one of our counseling rooms into a relaxing place for students to decompress. The theme of the room will be "Riding the Wave", an expression to explain our student's range of emotions. We will use the starfish toys, sea animal figurines, and twisteez purchased through this donation to help students positively cope with stress, grief/loss, relational conflicts, home issues, etc. This will also provide students a therapeutic space to feel safe, loved, and cared for.
One of our duties in our Counseling room is to provide direct social work services, including individual, group, and family counseling for students at our school site.
The lights and relaxing sounds purchased will transform one of our counseling rooms into a tranquil place for students to relax before returning to their academics. The calming nature of the room will increase their social/emotional development while also allowing them to return to the classroom ready to learn.
