My Project
This upcoming school year, I will be teaching College and Career Readiness classes for all 11th grade students. Although the class will incorporate topics related to college and career prep, including college visits, financial literacy, SAT/ACT prep, and career surveys and research, I am going to incorporate creative play and social-emotional learning activities to help students enter their post-high school life with confidence, creative thinking skills, and a shared sense of community.
Inspired by the work of Pittsburgh educator and TED talk speaker Michelle King, my classroom will be transformed into a space where play and creative collaboration are just as important as core literacy and math skills.
Michelle King, through her lectures and workshops, has demonstrated the necessity of including games, movement, and SEL conversations in the classroom. She believes these activities foster a sense of joy and openness in students, not just for learning but for life itself. In her words, "I often equate the work I do to farming. It’s cultivating the soil. Creating the conditions for the beloved community - love, equity, and justice - to grow and be harvested."
My goal this year is to work hard on social, emotional, creative, and collaborative farming. By focusing on creative play and SEL topics with students using the requested materials and presentation amplifier, I hope to plant that the seeds of love, equity, justice, and community in my students. Please help me start tilling this precious soil.
