My Project

Learning facts and skills on paper can't hold a candle to the effectiveness of practicing a skill with our own two hands. Our students are counting notes and rhythms out-loud, and also learning where notes sit on a staff. But the key to learning any new skill is to act on it and utilize our new knowledge in a real world scenario. In this case, to perform and create music.

Rhythm sticks and glockenspiels are instruments that can show students how the music theory they've been learning can be organized to produce harmonies, rhythms, and melodies.

The glockenspiels are excellent tools for teaching students about pitch, reading notes, and working together in performances. These particular instruments were selected because each of the musical keys is labeled with both the note name and solfege pitch. This combines both concepts (notes and solfege) into an audible and tangible reality. Rhythm sticks act as percussion instruments that can turn concepts like beat and rhythm into actual musical sounds. When rhythm can be translated into a pitch and sound, it can be integrated into music and melodies.
