Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our classrooms are vibrant spaces where students bring a wide range of cultural identities, lived experiences, and dreams for the future. As a 4th–5th grade teacher committed to equity and engagement, my goal is to start the school year by creating a classroom culture that centers racial justice, positive behavior, and joyful learning.

This project will help students build a strong foundation of respect, representation, and responsibility through three key components:

Boomwhackers for Classroom Conduct & Collaboration

Students will use these colorful, pitched percussion tubes in musical games that promote active listening, teamwork, and self-regulation. The physical and auditory experience of making music together mirrors the harmony we strive for in our classroom culture—each student’s voice contributes to a bigger whole.

Funko Pops that Reflect Who We Are

We’re selecting Funko Pop figures that represent diverse racial, cultural, and gender identities, so students can see themselves reflected in the rewards that celebrate perseverance, empathy, and leadership. These figures will be used as end-of-year achievements for students who embody our classroom values throughout the year.

Centering Racial Justice & Representation

Using read-alouds, classroom discussions, and community agreements, students will explore topics of identity, equity, and belonging. This work will not only guide how we treat each other, but also shape the shared expectations we build for our year together.
