Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It's no secret that school budgets have dwindled. Unfortunately art, music and dance are the first cuts school districts make. Instead, schools are focused on technology and implementing computer sciences. Computer science can be essential, but students should not have to go through their elementary career without arts. It is our duty as educators to map out our curriculum and discover ways to implement arts into our classroom.
Studies show their is a positive correlation between music and phonological awareness which attributes to reading abilities.
It is a sad truth that reading fluency is down across many districts. While I do believe a number of factors affect low literacy scores, I do also believe one of those factors is the lack of music in schools. My goal is to teach students music through a number of activities that will simultaneously teach rhythm and teamwork and will ultimately affect our literacy skills in a positive way.
Many of my students come from low income households. Especially in our current economy, many families struggle to put food on the table. That being said, many of these families are unable to fund extracurricular activities. My students are goofy, hard working individuals who never give up. They would love the opportunity to explore music. As of now, we explore rhythm through clapping, patting our knees, and patting the floor. I would love to give them the opportunity to explore music through other modalities.
