Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love working with new and different materials, but because of budget constraints we can't always get quality supplies. I want my students to be exposed to a variety of mediums, not only to motivate them in art class but to help develop their life experiences.
Our school is located in a low income, urban community.
Several of our students are first generation Americans with loving parents who want a better life for their children. Unfortunately, they don't always have the same opportunities as children in middle or upper income communities. These kids are smart and motivated, but sometimes emotionally troubled. When given the freedom and materials to create works of art, our students are especially expressive. The goal at our school is give our students the skills and opportunities to become happy and successful adults.
My Project
I'm requesting materials for printmaking and jewelry making. These are two assignments that I have always wanted to do with my classes, but am never able to afford the materials. When I do put in an order for new materials, I always order the essentials. I have purchased beads and string with my own money because the kids enjoy making jewelry so much. I've even brought in some of my own art supplies from home such as brayers. My students are young, but I know they can do an engraving printmaking project. I just never have the appropriate materials. With these supplies my students will be able to learn about the relief printmaking process and how to use new materials such as ink and brayers. Yay!
Even the kindergarteners know when the supplies are old and cheap or not intended for the project at hand.
I want to teach my students about a new type of art process with the appropriate materials. My students and myself want to create art with quality supplies. I also want to give the types of materials they want to work with. These kids love to create art! The majority of them don't have art supplies at home. Please help give them the opportunity to create!
