My Students

Our students come from very low-income families, so they really don't get to experience a lot in life. Our school is a Title One school, but our teachers wouldn't want to teach anywhere else.

Our students are really great kids who want to excel and become great leaders and people.

It's a great thing that they can see themselves out of the situation they are in and into a much better one. They strive to do well and try so very hard to do a great job.

Sometimes working with these students is hard, but these kiddos just fill my heart with joy. I couldn't imagine going anywhere else, even when I have the option to work with students who do not have the limits that these students must deal with.

My Project

My students are 8th grade intensive reading students. This means that they are not reading on grade level. They are reading at least 3 levels below where they are supposed to be. My school has a computer program that helps them get caught back up along with us reading 2 days a week as a group. It is very hard to keep them motivated.

Students are more engaged when they are proud of what they can achieve.

I have asked the students what would make them want to read. They have told me that they'd love to have food and candy if they get a combo. With these Oreo's, Snickers, Starburst, granola bars, and fidget toys I'd like to encourage them to keep their eyes on the prize. They know that they can earn a treat when they get a combo. A combo is 2 stories and 2 vocabulary lessons at a 80% or better. When they get 20 combos in a row, they receive a bigger reward from me and they level up. So they really want to do well and the treats really give them the incentive to keep going and do their best.
