This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I'm the librarian of a Title I high school in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. Our student population consists of tenth, eleventh, and twelfth-grade students. All of our student body receives free lunch. Many are reluctant readers who read more than two levels below grade level. However, despite the obstacles they face, our students are curious and motivated to learn. They just need more tools to encourage them to do so. They are incredibly creative and talented kids who are determined to make their mark in the world.
My Project
We have an annual Book Bowl for students who love reading. In a school with many reluctant readers, it is a joy to bring together a group that truly loves books. We struggle to adequately provide enough books for our students; extra money to provide prizes for our readers is just not available.
With the requested tumblers and vinyl, we can create easy prizes that our students will love.
We can use the tools in our library makerspace to cut the vinyl and affix the designs to the tumblers so our Book Bowl participants can have a tangible gift for their efforts. Of course, the true prize is the joy that comes from reading, but I feel that these tumblers would truly motivate and reward our students.
