My Students
I teach a diverse group of 5-6th grade scholars who receive special education services. My scholars are unique in both their background and their skill sets! They bring a lot of their personalities into the small group setting. They don't let their learning disabilities stop them from trying their best in the classroom! They are always surprising me with the way they think outside the box.
They have shown a lot of perseverance and growth since the beginning of the school year.
Many of my scholars have both academic and personal goals that they work hard towards in the classroom. They are always trying to beat their previous scores and get really excited when they mastered their goals. Even when they might not see growth, they encourage each other to try harder or would ask me what else they can do to practice at home.
My Project
Many of them try so hard to work towards their goal with all the challenges they face (both academically and personally). Help me reward my students for all the ways that they show up in the classroom by donating to our prize box. All students earn "bones" for positive behavior (being respectful, responsible, safe, kind, showing grit, etc) and academics. I would like to take this one step further by creating a classroom prize box for my scholars. Students would then be able to trade in their "bones" for something from the box.
The prize becomes a tangible validation of the child's learning as well as reinforces that they are doing a good job.
Additionally, with this project, I would like to create individual sensory bins for some of my students to use in the classroom when they get overwhelmed. This would give them one opportunity to refocus and reset their mind and well as their emotions while using a fidget toy.
