Our Title 1 school is kindergarten through 5th grade. The students at our school come from many different backgrounds, demographics, and abilities. Approximately 80% of our students are eligible to participate in the free or reduced-price lunch program and receive backpack food on the weekends. We strive for a firm foundation in reading and math so that our students can succeed no matter where they are starting academically.
Many of our students face personal challenges at home, yet they come to school each day excited and eager to learn!
Books are important to our students and are truly valued. My goal is to create a buzz about books and an excitement for reading in our school.
This school-wide incentive program will be used to promote a love of reading and to celebrate student success. Students will be able to choose books that interest them, which will increase time spent reading. They will earn coins for academics, citizenship-the possibilities are endless. Goodbye to candy and toy prizes, this book vending machine will cultivate a love of reading and cultivate life long readers!
This combination of a book vending machine and reward system will bridge the gap between literacy and engagement.
Findings published in the journal 'Social Science Research' show that children in a home filled with books positively impacts their future academic growth and job attainment. Beyond literacy, the study's authors found a correlation between homes full of books and both the "ability to use mathematical concepts in everyday life" and "the ability to use digital technology to communicate with others." Books in the home make a difference beyond literacy. With the help of this book vending machine we will be helping students develop their own home libraries.
