Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At our school, we have students from many diverse backgrounds, and from a very transient area. We are a Title 1 school with almost 88 percent of our population on free or reduced lunch. I try to make sure that our library is a welcoming place for all of our students, whether they have been here for 6 years or 6 days.

I love to reward my classes that have been able to follow the expectations in the library.

During a library reward time I like to expose them to STEM activities that they may not have time for in their regular classroom. I want kids to be able to build and explore, working together to accomplish things and learning new things they are capable of doing.

Our students do not have many opportunities outside of the classroom. I would like to give them a hands-on perspective to learning and expose them to different elements of STEM topics. I feel that our students need to be exposed to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math now because it will be a large part of their future.

My Project

With new STEM activities for my students to use, more classes will be encouraged to earn the reward library time. Exposing our students to different STEM principles will show our kids the many different things they can do, possibly directing them on a path they had not been exposed to previously.

With students coming from such diverse backgrounds, these activities can show them that they are all equally capable of building and imagining.

I want students to learn about team work and collaboration, working together to make things better.

In the past, I have had activities using materials that I can get for free. I would love to have some kits that are made to teach STEM fundamentals. These activities can be used by several different age groups and can be reused by several classes. The requested materials such as the Design and Build Engineering Centers and the Create-a-Chain Reaction STEM kit will give them opportunities to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Students will be able to build and create in many different ways, including building better learning.
