My Students
I teach an amazing group of students with special needs in an urban Title I charter school in Baltimore City. They come to school every day excited and ready to learn. They want to learn so much about the world around them and what's beyond the walls of our classroom. However, the students that I work with bring a lot of baggage into our classroom and it is my job to help them leave that baggage at the door, be kids for a while and learn through fun and exciting ways.
My students' disabilities range from Autism to Learning Disabilities and I find that the more hands-on and interactive learning can be, the more beneficial it is to my students.
Due to their disabilities, I am constantly changing up my teaching practices and finding new and exciting ways to reach and challenge my students without having them become frustrated and give up.
This year, I am teaching a group of 1st-4th graders in a pull-out setting, where I am helping them access the general education curriculum while also helping fill in the many learning gaps that they currently have.
My Project
On a daily basis, my students with special needs are met with emotional challenges that make it difficult for them to learn. When I pull them to work on specific reading and math lessons, one of my MAIN goals is to boost their self-esteem and help them realize the potential that they have within them. In order to do this, I am currently going through 1-5 sheets of stickers a day.
Stickers are given to students when they are following directions, getting answers correct, being nice to their friends, and for so many other reasons.
These positive rewards help my students stay on track and be able to complete their while also helping them to learn positive behavior traits and how to get along with their peers.
A lot of my students have behavior charts, where after they earn a certain amount of stickers-they are able to get a prize. Since we started with these behavior charts in the beginning of the year, my prize box has dwindled down to almost nothing and needs to be replenished!
I am asking for specific stickers that will help my students be motivated to complete their work. They are currently obsessed with specific characters and having these specific stickers will help motivate them to complete their work and work on showing positive behavior! Smelly and puffy stickers are also GREAT rewards for students! I am also very excited to gain new prizes for my prize box that are useful materials for the students to use, like bookmarks, play-doh, erasers and positive message bracelets!
