I am a second grade teacher at an inner city school. I am privileged to work with a group of amazing children who are eager to learn. I am in charge of our school store and PBIS (Positive, behavioral Interventions and Support) program which makes it easy to continuously recognize students for meeting behavior expectations from anywhere in the school, not just the classroom. Students are given hands for displaying good behavior and respect for themselves as well as their peers and teachers. They are also given hands for being responsible, showing self-control and being a good citizen. Every month we have a school wide PBIS day. The students in kindergarten, first and second grades participate in fun, engaging activities. Each classroom has a different activity that is led by a teacher. Some activities include, arts-n-craft projects, creating pictures out of shapes, and yoga. The students spend about 20 minutes in each classroom and then rotate to a different activity. When the students come to my classroom they have an opportunity to visit the "hand store" where they trade in their hands for cool prizes.
The PBIS rewards system approach focuses on positive reinforcement and avoids punishing children. Another important facet of the PBIS program involves using rewards to motivate children to behave in a positive manner.
These rewards are based on student interest such as glow in the dark bracelets, pull back cars and stickers.
Students are recognized for their hard work, being respectful to others, being responsible, showing self-control and being a good citizen. Rewards are an effective incentive for promoting positive behavior and with items being donated to our school, I am able to recognize positive behavior and motivate students to continue to do their best.
