My students need rewards for their good behavior in school; these include Legos and small toy figurines. They also need a microwave to engage in cooking activities.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are an integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) first-grade class, with a mixture of general and special education students at a high-needs, Title I school in the Bronx. While the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, they are enthusiastic and come to school every day ready to learn. They see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and love to make me proud.
My first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with, and they inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
Last year, our school implemented a positive behavior intervention system (PBIS). I mirrored this system in my own classroom, and I really saw a difference in the positive behaviors amongst the students! The only problem is, they are so terrific I am running out of ways to reward them! I am requesting rewards that will appeal to both the girls and boys in the class, including Legos, LOLz, Play Doh, and toy figurines. The students themselves have requested these specific incentives, so I know they will be highly motivated to earn these prizes. I plan on giving them away or letting them choose when they do something extra-special or meet a goal at the end of the week. My kids deserve it.
Every week, our class engages in “fun centers” as a reward for students for their hard work throughout the week.
These centers are designed to explore children’s creativity, as well as allow them the opportunity to practice skills of collaboration and socialization within small groups at a center of their own choosing. We are requesting a microwave to open a cooking center. This microwave will be used for students to make simple dishes for their classmates, including s’mores, hot cocoa, etc. We will also use it to heat up their foods during special events throughout the school year. We started this center last year, and unfortunately, our class microwave recently broke. Every day, I hear, “Ms. R, when can we start cooking again?” I would love to bring it back for them, and this microwave will be a great way to start!
