My Students
I teach 4th graders with high functioning autism. One of the biggest challenges in the classroom has been behavior control. Due to the autism, my students struggle with emotional control and frustration.
To help them with these difficulties, I have decided to use the principles of Safety, Respect, and Responsibility to guide our classroom behavior plan.
I teach my students to respect themselves, one another, and our classroom. I teach them that in life we have to be responsible for our own behavior and accept the consequences of our actions. I explain to them that making good choices will ensure that we have a safe environment. They have received this plan very well and we have seen lots of improvement in our classroom.
My Project
In our classroom, we focus on positive behavior and we reward good choices with incentives to motivate them to continue making those good choices. We use play money to help build financial literacy as we teach them to be responsible individuals. Every time they are caught making positive choices, they are rewarded with $0.25 to $1.00 depending on their action. During math time, they add up their money and change it for larger bills. On Fridays, we open our class store and they get to shop. I have “expensive” items such as lunch bags, stuffed animals, and larger toys that they can buy once they have enough money.
Students have to decide how to budget their money.
Should they waste their money on small prizes every week? Should they go without a prize for a week and save their money for larger prizes? It is up to them to make those decisions with their financial resources. Budgeting and making financial decisions is a life skill that they will always need so I am happy to be able to provide them with an opportunity to practice this life skill while rewarding positive behavior. The items in our store are running low, but with your help, we can refill it. Based on the items I tried out this year, they really enjoy buying things like writing utensils, erasers, highlighters, and toys.
