This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Many of my students come from an economically disadvantaged background with 71% receiving free or reduced-price lunch. My students' test scores are still below the state's average. However, they are improving at a significant rate. The school media center needs books and supplies to enrich students' learning and promote lifelong readers, which will, in turn, help every aspect of their school learning.
Our school strives to ensure every student succeeds, and the media center is an integral part of their individual and group success.
I work directly with teachers to enhance classroom lessons. Upon funding, my project will be ongoing and benefit every class in the school through active media center lessons.
My Project
Our school uses the Accelerated Reader program to track student progress and reading comprehension. Students are able to read a book, then take a short quiz on the book. We tally points, but we also look at who has the highest percentage of correct answers, which truly measures comprehension of the material read. I'd like to reward the student from each grade who has the highest percent correct on their quizzes with a Kindle Fire Kids Edition, for summer learning and reading opportunities. We will have a celebration during the last week of school, and award students with their prizes. This also ensures that students who may not be reading the largest books, but are still trying their best, can be rewarded for their hard work.
