Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach 6th grade English Language Arts at a school in a low-income community, and I’m lucky to work with over 100 incredible students each year. My students are bright, funny, thoughtful, and resilient. They bring so much energy and determination into the classroom, even when they’re navigating challenges outside of school.
One way I try to support and encourage them is through small rewards—especially snacks.
These treats aren’t just a fun bonus; they’re a key part of how I build classroom culture and keep students motivated. Whether it’s a student who finally feels brave enough to raise their hand, someone who’s made big strides in their writing, or a class that shows great teamwork, snacks help reinforce that their effort matters.
Many of my students are shy or hesitant to participate, especially early in the year. Having a small incentive can be the boost they need to find their voice, stay focused, or take academic risks. And let’s be honest—6th graders love snacks! They look forward to these moments, and it helps make school a place they want to be.
