Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the kindest and most motivated kids I know. They come to class and have meaningful discussions about difficult topics; they consistently surprise me with their insight and depth of knowledge.
Our high school is part of an inner-city, low-income school district.
These kids are used to always getting furniture and books and supplies that are bottom of the barrel and classrooms that are more institutional than inviting; however, they show up every day willing to look beyond those hardships and make the most of each day.
Furthermore, all of my students have taken the extra step to success by signing up for advanced classes and degree programs that require much more of them than the average student. With the IB program, my students are striving to receive not only their high school diploma but also an International Diploma that could get them into any international program. One of my current students wants to become an interpreter for the UN, and she wants to start by going to college in France. She already speaks three languages!
These kids are amazing, and they deserve the absolute best that we can offer.
My Project
This project is not for my classroom, but will be used to honor and recognize students who have displayed academic greatness on our campus.
So often, our students who compete in academic events or who gain admission into their dream colleges go unrecognized.
This project will enable me and the entire faculty at our school to recognize these kids and their amazing achievements.
With the felt board, I will create an Academic State Qualifier board for our students who qualify to attend State competition in Academic competition. We will include UIL Academics, Debate, Mock Trial, and Academic Decathlon qualifiers on the board. We currently do not have a place where we honor these students, and I would like to change that.
On top of honoring these students and encouraging more involvement, I would also like to recognize and honor our past graduating seniors who have achieved their dreams by gaining admission to their dream colleges and/or earning scholarships to make that dream possible. We will represent a variety of past students with a framed photo and description of their achievement as written by the teacher who would like to recognize them. I think that this will not only encourage those students still struggling to make it to college, but I also think that it will give teachers a chance to recognize those students with whom they've connected with and of whom they feel most proud. These will be placed in the main hallway of our building in trophy cases, and I hope to build upon this each year, adding students, until we have a whole hall of fame.
