Because I teach grade 8 in a middle school setting, not all books are accessible for all ages due to appropriate content. I find that my reluctant readers, often students from a lower economic demographic, prefer plots that will keep them turning pages and gasping for breath. So, to connect those dots, I would like to offer my grade 8 reluctant readers a chance to access those stories that will encourage them to read because they want to and not because they have to.
The books on this list encompass a wide variety of topics, some emotionally challenging, that will encourage readers to keep going until they finish the story.
With students who don't naturally love to read, this is often a lofty goal. My aim is to put these books in their hands so that they can experience the same success as avid readers who are flying through books.
This project will support the students I have who may not see themselves in the books they are currently reading. Some experience mental illnesses, eating disorders, have lost parents, or struggled with drug abuse at a young age, and I want them to have an outlet through which they can feel safe to reflect.
