My Project

I work in a small, small rural school. My K-12 school only has 200 kids, and 52 of them are high schoolers. I am, therefore, the singular high school English teacher for the district. The biggest surprise I've had so far this year is how well-behaved and engaged my Freshman class has been. They are incredible. I hear they are naughty in other classes, but in English 9, they do what I ask, stay caught up on novel reading assignments, and participate readily in class discussions. We just had our last grade check, and my freshman have the best grades out of all four English classes by FAR.

We started the year with "The Hunger Games," and now we have moved on to "Animal Farm." They loved the former, but are still deciding how they feel about the latter.

Because of how wonderful they have been, I want to reward them with another contemporary novel, "Every Day," but I have already utilized my book buying funds for the year. I feel like I have harnessed a love of reading with some of these students, and I want to make sure we don't lose momentum. "Every Day" is an incredible young adult novel that is not only compelling, but deeply challenges the reader to examine how they treat other people and if they approach life with an empathetic heart. I'm sorry to say, but my student body could use a little more of that kind of thinking, so this book will be perfect for more reasons than one.
