Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
From day one, my AP Art History students have demonstrated a thirst for and love of learning. Many have already been exposed to the great art institutions that have made this city one of the art capitals of the world. Others have been introduced for the first time to art; this introduction has lit a flame of passion and creativity that they carry with them in all aspects of their lives. As an Art Historian who has spent her life devoted to the arts, I know the importance of art in a student's life.
Exposing students to the arts is one of the most important things an educator could do.
Taking my students to the museums once a month further expands the classroom and shows students that there is a world beyond the walls of our high school. The students of RRGHST are also exposed to the business aspect of the art world--galleries, auction houses, etc.--and are starting to consider pursuing those as a career. Our Interior Design/Decorative Arts Club takes this even further, and brings to life the inner workings of the world of art.
My Project
The practices taught and learned in the AP Art History classroom will be used to design and create our school's first gallery that will showcase student work. Students will use the materials on our wish list to put the principles of design into practice.
By designing a warm and aesthetically pleasing environment, students will employ their decorative and artistic skills to create our very own student-run art gallery.
Our goal is to further a connection with the neighborhood, inviting people to come in and enjoy, not only the artwork, but the physical environment that students have carefully curated.
