My Project

We are a small school with approximately 240 students. 73% of our students are at poverty level and live in public housing within our school district. The school provides basic school supplies from backpacks to pencils and free meals to all students. With all the academic activities provided by their teachers, this after-school enrichment program will allow the students to expand their creativity through sewing.

The students will be applying their academic language to sewing (e.g., a 2-dimensional plane (pattern) can become a 3-dimensional garment/product).

Some of the things we will be making are patchwork lap blankets, bags, composition book covers, zippered pencil cases, garments, etc. In addition, this will allow these students to “give back” to their community by learning this valuable skill.

Currently, our program is available to 15 students, and we will use this award to grow our program to provide activities for 60 students.
