it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Could you sit in a plastic chair for over six hours a day? Could you sit for those amount of hours while learning new concepts? What about working productively and getting along with others--all while in a little plastic chair?
If I had to describe my classroom culture in one word, it would be collaboration.
My fourth grade class is comprised of 23 eager learners who would benefit from having comfortable seating options. My students need to be able to choose where they are most comfortable in order to maintain focus and be productive learners.
These fabulous 4th graders are from Carson City, Nevada. Over half of my students receive lunch at a free or reduced price.
My Project
One week ago, I had the privilege of "being the student" in a classroom amongst other teachers. We sat for the majority of the day just like our students do. We were sitting, taking in tons of new information and working together. We were uncomfortable, tired, and maybe even the tiniest, littlest bit cranky by the end of the week.
By Thursday I was hearing, "This must be how our students feel every single day." "I need a break." "I've been sitting too long." "I can't even focus on this."
It made me understand exactly how important comfort and choice is for learning--especially for our students. To revitalize the classroom space, flexible seating came to mind. I want my students to be comfortable while they learn. Ultimately, an increase in student comfort will lead to an increase in student learning.
I am asking for: 10 wobble cushions that can be used in a chair, if the student chooses, or on the floor with a lowered table, 6 portable recliners for students who prefer to work away from a desk, and 4 bouncy bands for students who prefer traditional seating, but need an outlet for extra energy.
