Revitalizing Our Classroom Library

My Students

2nd grade is an essential year for early elementary school students. After 2nd grade a student's reading ability becomes essential for every area of their academic studies. Our classroom goal is to improve our reading skills while developing our confidence to tackle future academic challenges.

My students are a resilient group of students, especially when it comes to literacy.

Their reading levels range from students who are barely reading at a beginning of 1st grade level to students who are reading at a 3rd grade level. No matter where my students fall within that range, our goal remains the same, become a stronger and more confident reader. My students participate in small group guided reading with me, and although they may have struggled with the reading the day before, they are ready to get to work and try again. I am grateful for their hard-work and they encourage me to become a better teacher. 3rd grade is going to be a big transition for my students because they will be entering a more intensive curriculum. To excel as 3rd graders my students are going to need to be strong readers. I owe it to my students to get them to the point where they feel comfortable and confident in their own abilities to succeed.

My Project

My students will be able to use the materials that I am requesting to help them grow as readers. One part of my materials are books that are aligned with the common core standards. These books will help prepare my students for the type of literature they will face on second grade assessments. The second part of my request list is to replenish out classroom library. As I said earlier the books in our library are falling apart and my students have read through most of the books. These new materials will excite my students, they are always asking me for new books that they can read. New books will encourage them to keep reading and to keep pushing themselves to expand their reading abilities.

This project will change a feeling of complacency toward reading in my classroom.

My students are discouraged by the condition of our library and they have read through most of the books multiple times. New reading materials will excite them and give them the incentive to keep reading and to keep growing as a reader. I look forward to surprising my students with these new books, they will be overjoyed with their new reading opportunities.
