My Project

My students are very special and unique to our rural area. We are borderline with the Navajo and Hopi Nation Reservation and families attend our school district to get a great education. With COVID-19, it has highly impacted this student population. It has created a life that most of these students are still trying to comprehend what has happened, and wonder why their families have been greatly impacted by the pandemic. With my project, my goal is to bring the life back into these Native American students by teaching them the ways of our culture, and the significant meaning goes behind the arts and crafts of our people. How important it is to learn their language, and to create a safe place in which they can express themselves in a positive manner. This will help with the hands-on activities, such as language preservation by having each student create their own set of flash cards with the Navajo and Hopi Language to learn basic wording and learn how to introduce themselves in their language. They will also learn the natural resources their ancestors have used to build their homes and will make small replicas using red clay. Weaving and beading is also a way for the students to express themselves and learn the arts that are well know to Native Culture. These materials will go side-by-side with many lessons the students will learn, including math, language, social-emotional strategies, environmental resources by doing the art hands-on, and understanding the significance behind the designs we will make. Overall, to get back to life pre-COVID, and have more cultural enrichment for all elementary aged students.
