Revealing Roald Dahl Through Book Clubs

My students need a class set of Fantastic Mr. Fox to launch our author study of Roald Dahl. We will then dive deeper with our study using Roald Dahl book clubs to highlight common themes.

My Students

Some of my favorite days each year are the days I announce our new book club units. Students listen to book talks and get a chance to explore each book. They then use a rating scale to mark their interest level and whether or not they believe it to be a just right book.

My 3rd graders love to read independently, but they also love to share and discuss books together!

Eight and nine year olds are typically at a point in their lives when they are excited to learn about other people's perspectives and the world around them.

My Project

Roald Dahl is one of the world's most beloved authors. Our 3rd graders will learn about his writing style and life by reading Fantastic Mr. Fox all together. Students will then get into groups to read various Roald Dahl titles through book clubs, noticing common themes and literary devices. They can connect the themes with their knowledge of Roald Dahl's life to explore how we can all use our personal experiences to develop our writing. Futhermore, they can use the literary devices such as figurative language and suspense in their own writing.

Book Clubs allow students to take their comprehension to another level through questioning and discussion while still staying in a "just right" book for them.

Students push each other's thinking by sharing their perspectives and their interpretations as they read. By reading together, students can also practice reading fluently and with expression.
