My Project
I selected these items because I believe they will be able to to help my classroom stay organized and my kiddos "fully stocked" with everything they need. My mission as a teacher is to encourage a love of reading and writing. Someone once said "literacy is liberty" and that is something that I think about all the time---the fact that so many Americans struggle with literacy is a huge contributing factor to life long inequality and poverty. I am blessed to teach in an amazing community but the truth is, nearly all of my students come from low-income homes. Most need school breakfasts and lunches, struggle to afford field trips, etc. Many of their lives have been impacted by violence and incarceration. My goal is to create a space that is calm, affirming, and conducive to quality learning. A third of my littles are reading well below grade level. This is something that can be combatted with high quality literacy instruction and that is what I am on a mission to provide. To help these kiddos advance in their reading and writing we do a lot of phonics activities on dry erase boards. These are fun and interactive and the kids love getting instant feedback on their work....the only hiccup is we are constantly running out of dry erase markers! We also do a lot of "word work" games and handouts-- some of these require sorting, coloring certain word families, etc. Pencils, crayons, and dry erase markers are things that we are constantly having to re-stock. Managing supplies and paper flow effectively is something I am hoping to streamline so that we can spend the maximum amount of time possible on quality instruction.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
