Reusable, Washable, Sanitary Sensory Items and Classwork

My Students

I am currently a special education teacher in D-75 in Queens. I teach wonderful kindergarten students with special needs. My students need sensory breaks throughout the day, and require differentiated and individualized instruction for all subjects, including social skills and life skills throughout the day.

My Project

All the students in my class are sensory-seeking students and require sensory breaks throughout the school day. Due to the pandemic, I have been providing their own toys, along with sensory toys which can be very costly. Two years ago, all the students were able to share all items in the classroom, however anything the students use in the classroom now, I have been cleaning them immediately for the safety of everyone in the classroom.

These sensory toys will provide opportunities for hands-on, tactile exploration.

The best part about these toys is that they are fully washable so they can be used and reused for many years. These items will provide opportunities for my students to continue having sanitary, clean, sensory toys of their own throughout the day.

Laminating pouches will be used to laminate all of my students' classwork. My students respond best with repetition so due to this, we use the materials daily throughout the school year. For example, if a student mastered identifying the letters of alphabet using cards that I printed and then laminated, I will be consistently maintaining these skills the entire school year so that the students don't regress. Every-time a student masters a skill, I make new materials immediately for every student in my classroom since all the instructions are individualized.
