Return to Learn Through Many Modalities

Help me give my students the best return to learn experience as we embark on our new school year. My students will be able to reach new goals by using a variety of modalities and manipulative materials.

My Students

Children at our school come from diverse backgrounds. Our student population includes approximately 75% military students as well as a diverse population of English Language Learners. At least 50% of our students are on free/reduced lunch status. Students are always interested to learn about their fellow classmates who move to our island from the mainland as well as other countries. They are fortunate to learn in a "melting pot" of many cultures.

Children at our school have a high curiosity level and are always eager to learn.

They get excited when they are able to experience new curriculum as well as new approaches to learning and teaching.

COVID-19 left us in lockdowns and quarantines which forced us to learn & teach is a distance learning approach. Students learned via technology and minimal hands-on approaches. Students are most successful when they are able to learn in a variety of modalities. Now that students are returning to school, providing them with the tools to succeed is paramount!

My Project

The main purpose of the project is to get students excited about learning by providing them with hands-on materials selected in this project will allow students to experience a hands-on, experiential learning model. By building class sets of materials, students will also follow safety guidelines in our ever changing pandemic world. Students should always be free to learn without fear of pandemics.

All students can learn and succeed.

During the past year and a half, many students learned at home virtually with little integration of hands on manipulatives. Students learn and retain information when curriculum is meaningful and reinforced. By using materials such as tens frames and base ten blocks, students will make concrete connections for basic math facts as well as be able to internalize meaningful math concepts. Students often have difficulty composing and decomposing numbers within the tens, hundreds, and thousands. Using base ten blocks will help students compartmentalize these concepts. Tens frame learning helps students to solidify addition and subtraction facts connected to the base ten mindset. Providing individual learning sets will allow students to succeed and excel in all of their academic areas.

Use of the Boogie Boards will help students in the areas of language arts and math. Students will be able to use the board in language arts to transfer vocabulary and spelling text. Students who need more basic practice will be able to use the board to practice their cvc words as well as practice their writing of alphabet if necessary. In math, students will be able to illustrate their thought process and show their mathematical computations and drawings to support their thinking.

Integration of hands on manipulatives and materials allow all students to find success by sharing their thinking thru visual illustrations and concrete representations.
