My Students

I strive to have an engaging classroom that keeps my students involved and excited to learn. I am at a great school with a variety of demographics of families, although the majority is in low-income families. We are a Title I school and although we have resources, it just never seems to be enough. When I send home homework, maybe two or three students return their work. They explain they don't have pencils, glue, or scissors to be able to complete the assignment. They have to take care of their siblings, stay with a caretaker until late hours in the evening, or just are not encouraged to work on their academics. When coming to school, many look forward to the consistency, love, and care they get while learning each day. The students love to engage with each other, even if it's while learning. They thrive but also need breaks throughout the day to keep their minds able to stay focused. As the year continues I learn each of them, their ways of learning and what benefits them to help excel their learning.

My Project

It's no surprise students have a hard time focusing, but when their home life struggles or the pressure is on them at home, it's tripling the stress to focus at school. Kids worry constantly about their siblings, parents, who's going to be there when they get home. When in class, their anxiety can be at a peak which interferes with their learning. Many students have to 'work' even after they go with no reward. Giving the students something to reward them for their hard work and dedication in learning when reaching goals motivates these students to keep pushing forward. I've realized, as they earn their prizes I want to keep rewarding them, but I also want to be able to reach each students likes in their rewards; but that requires more resources and spending funds that teachers don't always have available. By helping to grant our classroom with these prizes that these students can work towards, would be helping the students reach their goals and push themselves each day. We have many reward systems in place. When reading each night, you get two X's on your chart, when your chart fills up you get treasure box (every 20). When you pass 15 iReady lessons with 80% or higher you get treasure box. Each night you hand in homework and you get a punch in your punch card, when it is all punched out you get treasure box (10 punches). These are just some ways we have set in the classroom to give these students the motivation to keep pushing each day, this whole year. These items will give my students the excitement and encouragement to continue learning!
