My Project

The Superior School Forest, in collaboration with our middle school counselors and partnership with the University of Wisconsin Superior’s “Live Well” initiative, hopes to create a program of nature wellness retreats to support our students’ overall mental health. The goal of this event is to offer students the opportunity to reconnect with themselves, their peers and with nature. Our long-term goal is to grow this idea into one that benefits more of our kids for years to come.

Numerous research studies support the benefits of outdoor experiences on mental wellness.

Our retreats will take what we know through research, professional knowledge and experience and put into practice strategies, initiatives and experiences that will support our kids’ overall mental health. We know that supporting their mental health will have a direct and positive impact on their academic success.

Our retreat will include “Conversation Stations” that include clear popup dome tents, each containing lawn chairs and conversation cards. These materials will provide an opportunity for our kids to have in person discussions on topics that are relevant to them. All items purchased will be available for use in the future as we expand our initiative for years to come.

Our plan involves several nature-based mindfulness activities and will include partnerships with UW-Superior’s Pruitt Center, the Live Well initiative, local businesses and benefactors. We know there is strong support for research-based initiatives and are hopeful that we will secure the needed resources to bring it to fruition. We hope that you consider supporting this endeavor.
