Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Our students, aged three to five come to our preschool program from various backgrounds and cultures, each with their own unique abilities and passions. Our classroom includes a range of students who have disabilities as well as students who do not. The students learn to appreciate the differences among them and to work together to develop long-lasting friendships with their peers.
My Project
Conscious Discipline by Dr. Becky Bailey is a 20-year-old program recognized as one of the nation’s top 25 social-emotional learning programs. It helps teachers and students recognize three different brain states and helps adults shift their perception of conflicts to maintain composure and to respond differently to difficult situations. It believes in creating a school family that increases connections between children and adults, ensuring optimal development and learning for all and seven skills to transform everyday discipline issues into teachable moments, equipping children with the social-emotional and communication skills needed to manage themselves, resolve conflict and develops healthy behavior.
I will use the skills learned in this training to transform our classroom into a School family through routines, rituals, and structures that focus on building connections between teachers and students, students and students and families and the school.
We will focus on positive interactions within our classroom and make developing our social-emotional skills our priority. We will learn to self-regulate, notice and be conscious in working through difficult issues with a positive approach.
