We have two pre-k classes, serving a total of 38 children. We are excited to begin this program for our neighborhood families that is focused on social emotional development and helping children and parents be ready for school. Most of our students come to kindergarten with no experience with school, without having exposure to pencils, art materials, or books.
In our class, teachers and children carefully choose materials to help children tell their stories.
Teachers help children build their independence, confidence, and school readiness through literature, play, and love.
My Project
My pre-k students do not have easy access to books in their homes. In order for them to be ready to read in kindergarten and first grade, they first need language-rich and literacy-rich experiences. Engagement in classic stories, such as Three Little Pigs and songs such as "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" help children understand the structure of stories as well as practice retelling the stories and reading along with the teacher through repetitive and predictable text.
These books and storytelling materials will allow students to tell the stories over and over again after teachers have read the book to them, increasing their language and pre-reading skills.
The materials were carefully chosen to be related to fun, engaging stories and songs, promoting rhyme, repetition, counting, and story elements such as beginning, middle, and end. Our students will love having the opportunity to interact with the stories by physically moving the pieces around on the felt boards individually, in partners, or in small groups!
