Retelling One Good Story at a Time

My Students

My three-year-olds are some of the most amazing children I have ever met. They thrive while living in one of the most dangerous communities in our nation's capital. Some have gone through more in their young lives than many of us will ever have to endure in a lifetime. Now in the "new normal", they can't even escape to the sanctuary of school to escape the violence that riddles their neighborhood. Despite all of the challenges they face, they have still taken a leap into the unknown of virtual learning to begin their educational journey.

My students blossom with the educational and enrichment opportunities being offered, which helps them to build their background knowledge and exposes them to things they otherwise wouldn't be exposed to.

For all of them, school is where they have opportunities to build their academic and social foundations and set them up for success later in life.

My Project

Passing on the love of reading to students is one of the best parts of my job as a teacher. The joy students show when they pick up a book and get excited about what they see and want to share with you makes my day. For preschool students, an early indicator of reading success is being able to listen to stories and retell what happens in them by using the books and props as supports. The magnetic felt boards will be able to stick to the white board for students to use the story telling kits with.

These story retelling kits will then help foster students ability to retell a story.

The props will be used in the library center where students will have free access to them to retell familiar stories from our curriculum. The magnetic pocket sets will help us to organize our stories and make for clean up and storage easy. The pockets will also allow for markers and erasers to be stored for students to write about the retelling. The magnetic display shelves will give students a place to put the book they are retelling and use it as a reference.
