My Students

As students who have spent a significant portion of their middle school experience at home, learning academic lessons from behind a screen, and making emotional connections from behind a screen, the adolescents I come into contact with are hungry for personal connection.

A common desire to be together after so much time apart allows us to learn not only from the curriculum but from each other, making each experience, each interaction, and every moment of each day a learning opportunity.

After spending so much time behind a screen, these children require compassionate guidance as they transition from their home environments back to the busy hallways of middle school.

Most recently, with hesitation not common among middle school students, a 7th grader shared, "I don't know how to talk to my friends; I have learned to depend on group chats and texting, and that is easy. Real face-to-face talk scares me!" I want to continue to create a space where students can come together to practice positive communication skills so that they each feel confident in their ability to make healthy decisions and engage in healthy relationships.

My Project

After teaching middle school English for 26 years, I took an opportunity to transition into a new role in my district. In September of 2021, I came back to school as the Restorative Practice Student Support Facilitator, a new position, inspired by an ancient idea. I continue to be inspired to provide a safe, welcoming place for both staff and students as I settle into this new position.

Simply put, I get to help foster an environment that builds relationships, strives for mutual respect, provides space for open, honest dialogue and decision-making, and encourages individual accountability and responsibility.

The materials I am requesting with this project will be instrumental in providing a safe and welcoming environment where students will be participating in both Restorative Conferences and Community Circles.
