This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As I begin my nineteenth year teaching first grade, I see that there are some items that have been used up or broken that need to be replenished. One of our great needs is headphones. We use them with our laptops to reinforce concepts from our reading and math curriculum. The students usually take good care of their headphones, but accidents happen.
One of our favorite things to do in my class is read stories!
I added the kindness books to this project so each student will have their own book to take home. They all need more practice reading, and this will be a fun way to support their fluency and comprehension.
When we read our books it's also a great opportunity to learn new vocabulary words. I always tie a physical response to each word, then we write about them in our vocabulary journals. I love when they get out their journals during writing to incorporate their new vocabulary words. The journals give them a sense of empowerment, especially my students learning English.
We all love stickers, and my students will work very hard to earn a sticker. Nothing says, "Good job!" like a sticker, and when they find their graded work with a sticker in our classroom paper organizer, they finish the day feeling positive about the work they've done and are ready to come back for more learning the next day.
