My Students

I am helping to start a new school in North Minneapolis, starting with a founding class of 6th graders, who are striving for the best education possible.

6th grade is a high-impact year in reading for kids.

In English and Language Arts, our 6th graders will read for 30 minutes daily in their choice reading books. Having books they are excited about is crucial for this to be successful.

Researchers estimate that children learn 1 new word for every 1,000 words read. Between K-12th grade, students with an average daily reading time of 30 minutes or more will encounter 13.7 million words--allowing them to learn 13,700 new words all on their own! Students who read less than 15 minutes per day learn only 1,500 new vocabulary words from reading. That's a vocabulary gap of 12,200 words. We can't allow that for our students.

82% of students who fail an English course in 6th grade fail to graduate high school. The stakes are too high for our kids and their future--which is all of our future. We need to set them up for the most success possible. Please support us by building our library!

My Project

We're halfway through our 6th grade year at school and the KIPPsters have been doing great! Some of our scholars have also reached the halfway point of the Million Words Campaign--having read 500,000 words so far this year!

Now we need your help to refill our library and keep the kids excited about reading with brand new books to look through.

Every day, scholars have the opportunity to read for 25 minutes to eventually reach their goal of reading One MILLION words by the end of the school year. The only way they can get there is if we keep the good reading material coming. Help us reach our goal!
