Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 99% of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in our city. Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics. Our school is one of the only non-charter, non-magnet schools left in our area. We strive to diminish the struggles of each student and bring out their strong points and accomplishments. Our staff accepts the challenge of educating every student that walks through our classroom door. Our school truly is a family atmosphere.
My Project
One of my greatest memories of my school career, like many others, was that special time my teacher would set aside to read a powerful book to the class. I can remember sitting around with my peers, waiting with baited breath for what would happen next. Looking back, I can see all of the meaningful discussions and activities our class would participate in because of the content that was presented in that one book.
The impact a special book can have on a child is profound.
It's those connections to the text and characters that make our students feel like they are one with the book. This is the love of reading, and when nurtured correctly at this stage, can lead one to a lifetime of exploration; which is why I'm requesting a class set of the novel Restart.
