This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school serves a dynamic and diverse group of students from pre-kindergarten up to fifth grade. My classroom is a four-year-old kindergarten class filled with compassionate, lovable, enthusiastic little learners.
All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch each day, meaning they live in a high poverty area of our city.
My students often come to school carrying the weight of various traumas they have experienced in their short lives. School is a safe-haven for many of my pre-k students.
Pre-kindergarten is an imperative time in a child's educational life. Please help me to provide a safe, nurturing and engaging environment for my young learners!
My Project
My students come from various backgrounds and experiences. Many of my students come to school carrying the weight of trauma and stress. School is a safe place to learn, play, and grow. Unfortunately, it is all too common for my students to come to school tired due to lack of sleep the night before. Many of my students' families work multiple jobs to support their children, so it is common for my students to be at daycare until late at night.
Rest mats will provide my students a calming, peaceful place to rest after a busy day of learning.
Many of my students are extremely tired and downright exhausted after morning work time, lunch, and recess. They often look forward to the time in our schedule that is designated for "rest time". This time of day includes low lighting, calming music and nature sounds, and a quiet time to relax and unwind.
A classroom set of rest mats would allow my class to have a safe, sanitary place to rest.
