Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are the youngest lions in our PRIDE. Our neighborhood may have its challenges but school is our stability. My students learn emergent curriculum, social skills, and how to be productive in life.
The first five years are crucial for young children to set a strong foundation that provides balance and confidence in their future.
The role of the teacher is to show children what they are capable of and provide experiences for discovery.
When COVID began, my students were 2 and 3 years old. My goal now is to teach my students emotional literacy to help restore the deficiencies these young learners experienced during the pandemic.
Now, we are seeing their emotional needs in huge ways. My students do not fully understand social norms, situations, or dealing with conflict and frustration. During the lockdown, many students were home watching both parents working and older siblings learning online. This inadvertently taught them to expect connections to technology rather than humans.
My Project
This project provides opportunities for my young learners to better understand themselves. The weighted blankets will provide security and peace when they feel overwhelmed from being at school, conflict with peers, or difficulty dealing with new emotions. The foundation of empathy is having children understand how they feel and how appropriately express themselves. Next is to recognize those emotions and responses in others and now to respond.
Nevada State Standards for social-emotional learning focus on identifying a wide range of feelings and then expressing feelings or needs in the appropriate ways.
Having a safe environment where students can learn how to navigate this part of their development is going to help them in every area of life going forward. This emotional literacy will support them in higher grades, during peer relationships, and in their home environment.
