Responsibility Leads to Compassion for Living Animals
My students need terrariums, aquariums, gravel, and living organisms to investigate for our habitat and responsibility unit. Students will spend 15 weeks taking care of animals. We are following the Smithsonian Institution's National Science guide.
I teach first grade in the heart of Chicago. The students in my class are from all over the world and have a passion for learning. My students are caring, respectful of one another, and energetic. My students are a group of eager learners, always wanting to research and know more.
My students are caring, respectful of one another, and energetic.
They are open minded, and they accept all points of view.
They are one loving group of kids and I look forward to seeing their smiling faces everyday!
My Project
We are following the Smithsonian Institution's National Science Guide for organisms. This project will take about 15 weeks of student exploration with different organisms included.
Students will directly care for woodland and aquatic plants and animals.
They will also explore animal adaptations as a way to guide their learning.
This work impacts students in a very positive way. Older students have agreed that this project was their favorite, when they think about their first grade experience. Due to our budget, we can no longer afford for the school to pay for this amazing experience, so we are asking for your support. Students will benefit greatly.
The aquariums and terrariums we are asking for will include live plant and fish, we will also have worms that we will observe over the course of 15 weeks.
We will store the terrariums and aquariums on our students’ desks. We are hoping that students will learn more about woodland and aquatic animals in this way. They will be able to observe daily changes of our living organisms that will be included in the materials we have requested.
In keeping safety first, we have requested and are planning on using aquariums and terrariums that have a covering so that none of our live “friends” escape.
Students will be responsible for making predictions during this process and will maintain a log of their predictions and observations.
After our unit of study is complete, we will be able to reuse most of the items we are requesting, so this project can come to life again next school year.
All materials requested will make a huge impact for over 180 first graders!
