My Project
I am a teacher in a diverse and urban school where I work with all school ages. My learners at times struggle in the area of social and emotional development. My room is a proactive setting designed to help students’ problem solve, develop appropriate school and classroom behaviors, and reduce the need for classroom removal. It can provide social and emotional support, interventions and remedial supports for academics.
When the students are placed in my room, they are sometimes inconsolable and often need a moment to calm down or gather their thoughts.
I would like to incorporate the use of sensory items, to help my students regulate their emotions. The Beanbag chairs, calming posters, anger management posters and sequins fabrics are items I can put in my calming corner. The different games could help the students shift their thoughts as we discus strategies on ways to better regulate their emotions. If they are removed from their classroom and are too upset to talk, they can use the different fidget items. The liquid fusion tiles will come in handy with the younger students, for calming and regulating their movement as well as provide visual stimulation.
Your donation to my class will allow me to give my students plenty of resources to help them grow emotionally and socially. Instead of choosing to act out, they can make the choice to utilize the different sensory items in the classroom when they are not yet able to articulate how they may be feeling. The sensory items will serve as different outlets to help them calm down. The ability to manage their emotions will ultimately improve their performance in the classroom.
